Ingredients Needed to Make a Coconut Shake
Here are the main ingredients needed for this recipe. You'll find a complete list of ingredients listed in the recipe card below.
- Coconut Cream - you can either buy canned coconut cream or you can use coconut milk and simply use the thick creamy portion that sits on the top of the can. Do not use the liquid in the coconut milk can because your milkshake will be too thin.
- Coconut Ice Cream - Intensifies the flavor and is key to a milkshake!
- Whole Milk - I prefer using whole milk for a richer taste and because it's thicker.
- Shredded Sweetened Coconut - This is a bonus ingredient and not required, but I love the touch of something a little crunchy to top off the coconut shake. Plus it looks super cute!
See recipe card for quantities.
Instructions to Make a Coconut Shake
Here you'll find the basic steps to make this coconut milkshake. See the recipe card for full instructions and extra tips.
Place shredded coconut in a medium fry pan.
Coconut should look like this.
Combine coconut cream, ice cream, and whole milk into a blender. Mix to combine.
Pour into a glass and top with toasted coconut.
Hint: Use cold ice cream otherwise your coconut shake won't be cold enough and may be too runny. You can always add more ice cream if your milkshake is too runny.
Substitutions
Here are some common substitutions you may want with this coconut milkshake recipe.
- Ice Cream - instead of coconut ice cream, you can use vanilla ice cream; however it won't have as strong a coconut taste if you do this.
- Vegan - the whole milk can be replaced with a plant-based milk and you can select a vegan coconut ice cream to make this vegan.
Variations
Check out these variations to our coconut milkshake recipe:
- Banana - add frozen banana to the milkshake to create a banana coconut milkshake!
- Deluxe - besides toasted coconut flakes, you can also top with fresh raspberries, strawberries or any other fruit you love.
Equipment for Making a Coconut Shake
You'll need a high powered blender to make this coconut shake. You can use a Magic Bullet, but you'll likely have to open it up and stir it several times in order to ensure the ingredients incorporate and become milkshake consistency.
Storage
I recommend drinking the coconut shake immediately upon making it.
Top tip
Everyone has different preferences of thickness for their milkshakes. Try adding more ice cream if you like your coconut shake thicker, or adding more milk if you like it a little thinner.
FAQ About Coconut Milkshakes
You can! The coconut flavor won't be as intense so I definitely recommend using coconut ice cream.
If you prefer your milkshake to be even colder, you can freeze your coconut cream for 3-4 hours before adding it to the blender. Additionally, you can chill the glass you're going to serve your coconut shake in. You can even add in ¼ cup of ice if it's an especially hot day to prevent melting.
