If you're looking for a moist, flavorful and delicious banana bread sans gluten, this recipe is for you! It can be made in one bowl and is incredibly easy. It's packed with chocolate chips and I bet you won't be able to tell it's gluten-free. We've even included instructions to make it vegan too.
Banana bread is such a staple in our household. I think banana bread is perfect all year round; however we particularly love making it as summer changes to fall.
This was inspired by my easy banana chocolate chip loaf on this site. It was such a hit with my kids that I thought, why not try to make it gluten-free so our gluten-free friends can have it too.

Ingredients for Banana Bread Sans Gluten
Here are the main ingredients needed for this recipe. You'll find a complete list of ingredients listed in the recipe card below.
- Vegetable Oil - Key to a moist banana bread. Use any neutral flavored oil.
- Bananas - These should be very ripe. Like the type of bananas you've forgotten about on the counter for a week. Brown spots, perfect!
- Light Brown Sugar - An important component to adding depth of flavor to our loaf.
- Granulated Sugar
- Eggs
- Pure Vanilla Extract
- Gluten-free Flour - I highly recommend using Bob's Red Mill Gluten Free 1:1 Baking Flour. It's my tried and true gluten-free flour. You won't even be able to tell a difference to regular flour.
- Salt
- Baking Soda - Helps with rise.
- Baking Powder - Helps with rise.
- Semi-Sweet Chocolate Chips - A delicious add in that I highly recommend! My kids of course love them.
See recipe card for quantities.
Instructions to Make Banana Bread Sans Gluten
Here you'll find the basic steps to make this gluten-free banana bread. See the recipe card for full instructions.
Into a medium bowl with your mashed bananas, add your eggs, Greek yogurt, oil and pure vanilla extract. Mix to combine.
Add flour, baking soda, baking powder, salt, white and brown sugars. Mix to combine.
Fold in chocolate chips.
Pour into a greased loaf pan and bake.
Hint: this loaf takes a surprisingly long time to cook. Don't rush the process by opening the oven door early. This can cause the loaf to sink in the middle.
Substitutions
- Eggs- instead of eggs, you can use unsweetened apple sauce. For every egg required in the recipe, use ¼ cup of unsweetened applesauce.
- Chocolate Chips - use milk chocolate chips for a slightly sweeter banana bread
- Greek Yogurt - if you don't have Greek yogurt, you can replace it with equal quantity of sour cream.
- Vegan. If you'd like to make this loaf gluten-free and vegan, simply substitute your eggs as indicated above and use a vegan plain yogurt in place of the Greek yogurt.
Variations
Here are a few variations you might like to try with this gluten-free banana bread recipe.
- Milk Chocolate Chips - need I say more?
- Nuts - Adding nuts to this loaf can add such a delicious crunch.
- Raisins - These can add a lovely texture.

Equipment
You truly don't need any equipment to make this banana bread recipe. You can use a fork to mash up your ripe bananas and then fold in the rest of the ingredients with a spatula.
Most of the time I do end up using either an electric stand or electric hand mixer to make the process a bit easier.
Storage
Store your banana bread sans gluten wrapped tightly in plastic wrap at room temperature for up to 4 days.
This banana bread does hold up well to freezing for up to 2 months wrapped tightly in plastic wrap and in an airtight container. Allow the banana bread to thaw on the counter for about 2 hours before enjoying
Top tip
Measure your flour properly. It's so important to NOT use your measuring cup as a scoop. Doing this will result in flour being packed down into the cup. Your banana bread will be dry. Instead use a spoon to spoon flour into the measuring cup and then level it off.
FAQ
Yes. You can either make this banana bread sans gluten and wrap it tightly in plastic wrap for up to 4 days or you can make the butterscotch and chocolate chip cookie dough and roll it into balls and then freeze in an airtight container for up to 3 months. When you're ready to bake them, simply remove them from the freezer and place on the counter for about 2 hours. Bake and enjoy.
You can! I've included instructions about how to make this loaf vegan in the variations section above.
