Baking a cake from scratch can be SO intimidating. I totally get it.
There are often multiple components - the cake, the buttercream, fillings - of course it's easy to get overwhelmed, especially if you're new to baking! I have a whole guide outlining how to schedule baking and decorating a cake (and you can grab it here!)
Tips for success baking a cake from scratch:
- Read the recipe a few days before you anticipate baking. This allows you to make sure you have all of the ingredients, understand how long each step will take and plan your time accordingly.
- Follow the recipe! This sounds so simple, but it's so important. The person who created this recipe has tested it and worked out the kinks. They have likely even included how long (eg. 30 sec) you should mix, cream etc. Not following these specific guidelines is a recipe for disaster!
- Begin with a tidy and organized kitchen. Okay, so admittedly this is a personal preference...but I do think it helps to reduce stress and overwhelm during the process.
- Pre measure your ingredients. This ensures you don't miss ingredients when you begin combining ingredients. You will also be forced to slow down and measure the ingredients properly!
So, not that we've talked about how to be successful, I want to share the most common cake baking errors I see. It's just as important to understand the most common errors made so you can understand how to avoid them. I've made a special guide that you can print off and plaster on your fridge so you don't make them yourself!!! Click below to grab the guide!
Happy Baking!
